In a review paper on the epidemiology of prostate cancer published a few years back, Henrik Grönberg, from the Department of Radiation Sciences/Oncology at Umeå University, Sweden, states that prostate cancer is the sixth most common cancer in the world (in terms of the number of new cases), the third most common cancer in men, and the most common cancer in men in Europe, North America, and some parts of Africa. In 2000, the number of new cases of prostate cancer was estimated at 513,000 worldwide, and this disease accounts for 97% of all cancers in men (153% in developed countries and 43% in developing countries).
