Acute Mesenteric Ischemia: Have the Guidelines of the World Society of Emergency Surgery Analyzed All the Available Evidence?

We read with interest the recently published paper by Bala and co-workers in the August issue of World Journal of Emergency Surgery, regarding “Acute mesenteric ischemia: guidelines of the World Society of Emergency Surgery” [1]. In their overview, the authors report that primary treatment of arterial occlusive acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a prompt laparotomy, limiting the endovascular approach to patients with very early stages and partial arterial occlusion. The latter concept is further stressed in Statement 10 of their recommendations, where Bala sustain as recommendation 1C that “Endovascular revascularization procedures may have a role with partial arterial occlusion.” …
