Elevated blood glucose concentration is an important factor for mortality and morbidity in critically ill patients. Previously, a randomized controlled trial showed that a blood glucose level of about 6 mmol/l is associated with less multiorgan failure and a significantly higher survival rate compared with levels above 8 mmol/l.
