Some studies have assessed the effect of acupuncture on gastrointestinal motility
1; however, Eastern studies frequently do not adopt rigid protocols based on sham acupuncture to avoid the placebo effect. The effect of acupuncture on esophageal motility is still elusive due to the lack of studies with adequate methodology. A previous study by our group showed that acupuncture significantly decreases lower esophageal sphincter (LES) resting pressure in healthy volunteers.
