When we once started reconstructing the ACL with patellar tendon in the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm in the mid-1960s, we had a rule to never perform this surgery on patients more than 40 years old. Our reasons for this were that athletes had usually given up their career by that age and that most people lived a sedentary life after 40 to 50 years of age.
