During a domestic dispute between a husband and wife the wife was violently shoved to the floor. The 46-year-old woman felt a sharp pain in her right hand and discovered that the end of her fourth finger was missing above the second interphalangeal joint, although she did not know exactly how it happened. The husband took her to the hospital emergency department, where surgeons diagnosed avulsion of part of the distal finger (Fig. 1). The level of amputation and the irregularity of the wound precluded digital repair. No other traumatic injuries of the upper limb, particularly of the hand and wrist, were observed. Treatment included surgical trimming and suturing of the wound, antibiotic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory medications, and outpatient follow-up.×
