Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has recently become increasingly popularized in the United States and Europe. In the future this trend is likely to guide healthcare policy as increasing scrutiny is directed towards proven clinical outcomes and healthcare resource redistribution. For the neurosurgeon, a working knowledge of the basic tenets of this building wave will become increasingly important, and in the years to come it is likely that a neurosurgeon’s decision to perform a diagnostic test or procedure will need to be based upon some element of scientific evidence to support its use (and its reimbursement). …
