It is not every day that Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady, writes a Forward to a book. However, given her long standing interest in mental health, it is quite appropriate that she introduced A Public Health Perspective of Women’s Mental Health, edited by Bruce Lubotsky Levin and Marion Ann Becker. Mrs. Carter began asking questions about mental illness in the late 1970s, soon after her husband’s inauguration as President of the United States of America. She demonstrated that the data were seriously lacking on who was suffering from mental illness, who was being treated for mental disorders, and what treatments were commonly used. That gap became the impetus for the landmark Epidemiological Catchment Area Study. …
