A guideline for perioperative smoking cessation

Anesthesiologists have been struggling with perioperative management of patients with a smoking habit in terms of their various physical conditions, including respiratory and cardiovascular functions. Although the JSA issued their own “Smoking Cessation Declaration” in June 2008, it has not attracted much attention from anesthesiologists and is far from yielding the desired results. It is widely known that smoking affects the effectiveness of perioperative systemic management as well as prognosis. Obviously, earlier initiation of preoperative smoking cessation is desirable, given that it is useful for decreasing respiratory complications. However, there are many problems that cannot be solved through the efforts of individual anesthesiologists alone, so the JSA formulated this guideline to ensure that not only anesthesiologists but also surgeons in each surgical specialty clearly understand how perioperative smoking cessation should be managed. …
