Yersinia enterocolitica and
Y. pseudotuberculosis have been reported as a cause of gastroenteritis and mesenteric lymphadenitis. Sometimes, a
Yersinia infection is suspected on the basis of postinfectious complications, such as reactive arthritis or erythema nodosum, after an infection which has mostly passed unnoticed [
1]. Different pathogenic serogroups of
Y. enterocolitica are found in different parts of the world. For many years, serogroups O:3 and O:9 were predominant in Europe, while
Y. enterocolitica serogroup O:8, biotype 1B was the most prevalent serogroup in the USA [
1]. Nowadays, in North America, the epidemiological pattern of
Y. enterocolitica infections has changed, and serogroup O:3, biotype 4 is now predominant, like in other parts of the world [
