The authors describe the possibilities of using the Internet to make medical information sources more accessible. Existing Web applications such as WebMedline (an interface to the online database MEDLINE) and CliniWeb (an annotated collection of Web sites), as well as the diagnostic decision support system DXplain, are described in some detail. MedWeaver is then introduced as a research prototype of an integrated service that combines these applications. According to the authors, this system provides simplified, more intuitive access to up-to-date information, while the integration offers fast and comprehensive delivery. The paper does not, however, indicate the reliability of the results of the present system, and it ignores the danger that shielding users from the underlying structures may give false impressions of accuracy and completeness. The authors also seem over optimistic about the possibilities of increasing retrieval relevance by automatic means. Nevertheless, the paper, which is directed primarily to developers of information systems, describes an interesting step in applying the Internet to make information more accessible for real users.
