Abstract
The occupation of dance teacher is not protected by law and is extremely variable with a diverse physical load profile depending on the dance style in question. Basically acute injuries may endanger the career in this movement oriented occupation. There have not yet been any publications on occupational accidents in professional full-time dance teachers. The data for the evaluation were obtained from work accident reports, accident records as well as case records of the State Accident Insurance Berlin (UKB) on work accidents in professional full-time employed dance teachers (n=41, males n=17, females n=24) aged 35-59 years. Evaluation and descriptive statistics were processed by SPSS and Excel. On the whole work accidents in dance pedagogic are extremely rare. Merely in 46.6% of the work accidents could a causal connection to teaching (dance specific) be found. The injury pattern is generally similar between sexes (males 47.1%, females 54.2%) with the lower extremities as a common injury location. There is a correlation and dependence between the time of day and a higher injury risk. More than two thirds (67.9%) of the accidents were due to clearly definable exogenous factors and 32.1% were multifactorial. The risk of sustaining an injury seems to be relatively low for dance teachers. However, to be able to define the term health risk for the occupation dance teacher that is not protected by law, follow-up research is necessary. Injury prevention programs are as varied as the range of physical activities of this occupation.
