Wilson's disease: MRI demonstration of cavitations in basal ganglia and thalami

Abstract

An MRI study of a patient with Wilson's disease is described, showing bilateral hyperintensity of the basal ganglia and thalami on T2-weighted images. Multiple, small nodular hyperintensities were superimposed on these hyperintense regions which presumably represented cavitations secondary to the spongy degeneration that is one of the histopathological features of cerebral Wilson's disease.
