Drug-Induced Headache

Part of the book series: Advances in Applied Neurological Sciences ((NEUROLOGICAL,volume 5))

Abstract

In recent years, the prophylactic treatment of primary headaches has been widely developed both in the theoretical and practical fields. New lines of drugs, non-pharmacological strategies and combined, sometimes highly effective approaches are responsible for this development. Nevertheless, despite the great number of controlled clinical trials on headache prophylaxis, similar approaches have not been provided in the management of the acute phase of headache. Thus, the chances of a successful outcome in this field are as limited as in the past. Treatment is restricted to the use of either ergotamine derivatives or various combination products, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are widely used in many other painful conditions.
