Abstract
The collagen meniscus implant (CMI) is the first tissue-engineered device shown to be effective to support new meniscus-like tissue in knees of human clinical patients. The CMI now has a 15-year history of successful use in over 3000 patients, including sportsmen and competitive athletes. This innovative scientific achievement in the area of sports medicine and sports traumatology may provide significant benefit to millions of people who have previously lost part of their knee meniscus, as well as those who suffer acute knee meniscus injuries otherwise irreparable. The CMI has been shown in numerous laboratory and animal studies to support ingrowth and the maturation of meniscus fibrochondrocytes and the development of mature and functional new fibrocartilaginous matrix. This chapter describes the rationale, development, and basic science of the CMI.
