Abstract

For decades it has been implied that protein metabolism plays a role in various neural functions and that disruption of this process might be causative in several pathological states. The effects of various chemical and physical treatments have also been attributed to alterations in protein metabolism. But obtaining conclusive data concerning these hypotheses has proved elusive, due primarily to methodological inadequacies. In recent years several laboratories, including ours, have endeavored to improve or develop new methods of measuring protein metabolism in cellular systems and these are emphasized below.
