Abstract
In Germany, more than half of adults and about every eleventh child are overweight. The modern world promotes physical inactivity and unhealthy diet, thus, finally leading to overweight. Obesity causes noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, which impose high costs on society. Currently, obesity prevention in Germany relies on interventions that aim at behavioral changes of individuals (behavioral prevention). As these interventions proved to be low in efficacy, a shift is needed towards measures that change the environment in a way to promote a healthy lifestyle (environmental prevention). Such measures that are able to counteract obesity include the following: at least one hour of physical activity at school, increased taxes on unhealthy food and lower taxes on healthy food to promote healthy choices, mandatory quality standards for meals at school and in kindergarten as well as a ban on advertising for unhealthy food addressing children.
