Abstract
Sonography is a radiation-free, fast, cost-effective and widely available method for the evaluation of skeletal maturity. Reference studies that can be used for forensic examinations are available for sonographic evaluation of the ossification stage of multiple skeletal regions. The combined examination of the iliac apophysis and of the epiphyses of the medial clavicle, the distal radius, the greater trochanter of the femur and of the distal fibula provides proof of completion of the 14th, 16th and 18th year of life. To increase the reliability of the results of sonographic examinations in age estimations, the findings should be independently evaluated by at least two experienced examiners with a subsequent discussion to reach a consensus.
