Abstract
In recent years forensic age diagnostics in living adolescents and young adults has become more and more important. In Germany the legally relevant age limits are 14, 16, 18, and 21 years of age. In accordance with the recommendations of the Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forensische Altersdiagnostik, AGFAD), the following tests should be performed in combination for age estimation: a physical examination, an X-ray examination of the hand, a dental examination including an orthopantomogram as well as an additional X-ray examination of the clavicles with completed development of the hand skeleton. Without an authorization for an X-ray examination the spectrum of methods is limited to a physical examination and determination of the dental status. Based on the use of radiation-free imaging procedures a clear improvement in the reliability of these age estimates is expected. The influence of ethnicity and socioeconomic status on the examined age characteristics must be considered in the assessment.
