Abstract
In anaesthesia, the peak-to-peak value of the arterial pulsations in the plethysmogram is used to assess the peripheral circulation. The detection by a conventional peak detector is often impeded, however, because its output signal includes the peak-to-peak value of respiratory waves. Moreover, it does not eliminate electrical and mechanical disturbances. A newly designed peak detector is compared with a conventional type during anaesthesia in a clinical setting. The results show that the new detector actually indicates, only the amplitude of the heart synchronous arterial pulsations and that its disturbance suppression is very satisfactory. Its use can be extended to other purposes as well.
