Auditory Event-Related Potentials in Studying Developmental Dyslexia

Abstract

During the last decade an intensive use of electrophysiological techniques could be seen in developmental studies. The growing use of these techniques in a research area, called developmental psychophysiology is mainly due to an increasing interest on the neurobiological correlates of language-learning disorders as well as to the noninvasive nature of the measurements needed. Furthermore, the complex cognitive abilities and skills underlying speech processing, reading and writing, can be difficult to follow only with behavioral measures. The mismatch negativity eventrelated brain potential component sensitive to auditory stimulus comparison is more and more intensively used in these studies. The MMN evidences of a general or specific auditory processing contributing to developmental dyslexia are discussed in detail. Results of recent studies of the Budapest group indicate that the MMN elicited by various stimulus contrasts gives a fine-grained picture of the intact, impaired and underdeveloped comparison of speech (acoustic/phonetic) and non-speech (acoustic) stimuli. MMN of 64 dyslexic children of 7–14 years of age and 64 gender and age matched controls were investigated in order to judge on correlation between MMN abnormality and behavioral discrimination performance.
