Abstract
In this chapter we provide an introduction to health promotion practice, politics and ethics and link the three central themes of the book — health, equity and empowerment — in a discussion of the social determinants of health. We conclude with a reflection on what this means for practitioner competencies and ethics.
Failing to meet the fundamental human needs of autonomy, empowerment and human freedom is a potent cause of ill health.
