Abstract

In medical or biological studies, a hypothesis about a population is investigated by an experiment. The results of the experiment are the data, which form a collection of observations or measurements made on individuals of the population. This sample of observations represents a rough idea of the total population. Statistical methods are intended to help the experimenter to describe the relevant information of the data and to draw conclusions about the population from the sample. Those methods which are needed for the concluding part of the data analysis are based on probability theory, and correct results of these techniques are only guaranteed if the data fulfil certain requirements.
