Abstract
The classical concept of the development of the omentum was that the stomach rotated and a long dorsal mesentery containing the spleen and pancreas became folded to form a dependent large inferior recess known as the lesser sac [65, 69]. Subsequent fusion of the two layers was thought to produce the greater omentum. Attachment to the transverse colon in the 4th month of gestation has been described as taking place progressively from the hepatic toward the splenic flexure in man [95, 96].
