Abstract
The term for the omentum which first appears in Western culture is “dertron” in HOMER’S Odyssey in the eighth century B.C.1: in Hades the giant Tityos was eternally punished for his crimes by vultures which plunged deeply into the dertron to feed on his liver [54]. Related to “dero” (to flay) and “derma” (skin) this term reflected the membraneous character of the omentum.
