The Historical Perspective of Gastric Cancer

Gastric Cancer

Abstract

Current discussions on a scientific issue in the area of medicine should start by casting a quick glance at the historical development of previous etiological, pathogenetic, diagnostic, and therapeutic findings.

Looking back helps to clarify whether an idea of one’s own or a colleague’s, concerning a certain scientific issue, has already been communicated and treated in a study.

Looking at the history of the therapy of an illness also serves as a frequently underestimated source for new scientific approaches and innovative curing processes. In this book Gastric Cancer: Principles and Practice-Materials and Instructions, the historical retrospect presents a cross section of different therapeutic approaches spanning the past 125 years.

During the course of this long period, grand developments in the field of gastric carcinoma can be observed. It began with the surgical therapy of gastric resection around the year 1881, followed by a systematic histological work-up, as well as diverse surgical principles of radicalness and reconstructive procedures.

Throughout past decades, competence centers were established that carried out and evaluated a wide variety of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and specific antibody therapy.

This historical perspective of therapeutic developments mentioned is meant to promote the readers’ interest in the body of knowledge on gastric carcinoma—as well as to provide the expert with motivation and assistance for further innovations.
