Abstract

If the diagnosis of influenza in the individual patient is at times ambiguous, the identification of influenza epidemics is not. In the north temperate zone, the abrupt appearance of febrile respiratory disease affecting adults as well as children in the early winter can be assumed to be influenza pending virologic con-firmation. Characteristically, sporadic cases are seen in late November and December; then, following the Christmas holidays, the disease becomes epidemic. School and industrial absenteeism and clinic visits increase, and somewhat later excess mortality related to pneumonia occurs.
