Abstract
Purpose of Review
In this review we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of current trends in managing distal urethritis, a prevalent condition with significant global health implications. We delve into its epidemiology, aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and evolving treatment strategies.
Recent Findings
Recent research highlights the increasing incidence of distal urethritis, particularly non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU), and emphasizes the importance of accurate pathogen identification for effective treatment. While established antibiotic regimens effectively target Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, managing NGU necessitates a broader approach due to its diverse aetiology, including emerging pathogens like Mycoplasma genitalium.
Summary
Successful management of distal urethritis hinges on a multidisciplinary approach encompassing accurate diagnosis, targeted antimicrobial therapy, and preventative strategies. Future research should focus on improving diagnostic tools for identifying causative agents in idiopathic cases, optimizing treatment guidelines for emerging pathogens to combat antimicrobial resistance, and developing effective preventative measures, including vaccines.
