Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) has long been recognized as a life-changing intervention in the management of complications from portal hypertension. Initially reserved as a last resort for refractory variceal bleeding or ascites, growing evidence now supports that the pre-emptive use of TIPS (p-TIPS) in patients with variceal bleeding can significantly improve survival in selected high-risk patients [1].
