We thank Dr. Holihan and colleagues for their thoughts regarding our article “Obesity and abdominal hernia in ambulatory patients, 2018–2023” [1]. We agree with Dr. Holihan and coauthors that research using administrative data based on billing codes is fraught with limitations. We also agree that research based on billing codes is often times used inappropriately in attempts to study epidemiology or clinical outcomes. However, there are circumstances where research based on this sort of data is informative. We believe our study is one of those circumstances. …
