Empowering older people

Swaleh Toofany Senior lecturer, Faculty of Health and Human Sciences, Thames Valley University, Slough

Nurses and other health professionals looking after older people are in the ideal position to empower them, says Swaleh Toofany

Despite a number of government initiatives and policy directives to get users more involved and have a say in the delivery of health and social services, the current healthcare climate is more likely to make older people feel disempowered as opposed to feeling empowered. This applies to the climate in an acute NHS trust or in residential care.
