Abstract:
Although not necessarily consistent, a good correlation appeared to exist between colour-breaking of camellia flowers and yellow mottle and/or necrotic rings of leaves.
Electron microscope examinations of dip-preparations of flower and leaf specimens after negative staining with 2% uranyl acetate pH 7.0 revealed rod-shaped particles measuring approximately 150 nm x 25 nm.
Aggregates of particles morphologically similar to those found in the dip-preparations were observed in thin-sections of camellia leaf tissue showing the typical symptoms.
The disease agent is not sap-transmissible and the symptoms can be reproduced only by grafting.
