When interventional radiology (IR) emerged from within radiology in the second half of the twentieth century its promise was immense. It offers methods of treatment that can replace more invasive and dangerous procedures, allowing rapid relief of symptoms and early return to normal life. The potential benefits to individuals, the healthcare system, and the public purse are substantial and often underappreciated.
