Recent studies elucidated that tumor microenvironment (TME) influences tumor biology, including proliferation, invasion, and migration, and thus affects patients’ outcomes.
1 Tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) is a critical player of TME, consisting of two distinct phenotypes, M1- and M2-types.
2 These two types of TAMs play opposite roles in tumor progression: M1-type is known to inhibit tumor progression, whereas M2-type promotes tumor growth and aids in tumor immune evasion. M2-type macrophages are the predominant subtype of TAMs in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and are associated with poorer overall survival.
