Abstract
To evaluate the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for cutaneous and mucosal lesions in patients with epidermolysis bullosa. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs) and case reports addressing the research question were included in the search. However, no RCTs or CCTs were found. Studies that did not present a complete empirical article format or did not focus on epidermolysis bullosa and low-level laser therapy were excluded. Searches were conducted in electronic databases (PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs). The quality of the studies was assessed using the RoB 2.0 tool, with individual results for each domain of the included studies. The four selected studies pointed out the potential of LLLT in healing, reduction in reported pain and lesions caused by epidermolysis bullosa, suggesting that LLLT is a non-invasive treatment modality that should be considered as adjuvant therapy in patients with EB. Additionally, the combination of LLLT and platelet gel derived from umbilical cord blood (CBPG) resulted in a significant reduction in pain and lesion size in seven patients with EB. The combined treatment of LLLT and platelet gel showed superior efficacy compared to LLLT alone, with positive results maintained up to six months after treatment. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) proves to be a promising approach for treating lesions on mucosal surfaces, both alone and in combination with other treatments, due to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and biomodulatory properties. In addition to being an effective method, LLLT is safe, easy to apply, and does not present significant side effects, especially in younger patients. Given its efficacy and safety, further studies are crucial to expand the knowledge of LLLT and other integrative practices as adjunct therapies, aiming to optimize treatment protocols and improve patients’ quality of life.
