Pumping Strategies to Improve Exclusive Breastfeeding

Breastmilk feeding is a cost-effective measure to reduce neonatal mortality and morbidities especially among those born preterm [1]. Timely onset of lactogenesis II and adequate volumes of expressed breast milk (EBM) by postpartum day 7 or day 14 predict successful lactation at discharge and thereafter [2]. Periodic pumping, milk expression and maintenance of pumping logs during the first week have been found to increase milk volume and amount of mothers’ own milk (MOM) [2]. Emphasis on early expression of milk, continuous lactation support and encouragement for milk expression have positive impact on EBM volume. Milk volume and sustenance of breast feeding have been comparable between mothers who did manual expression or used manual or electric breast pump [3]. However, the pattern of pumping and duration of pumping while using these pumps are likely to affect EBM volume. In this context, the study done by Kalathingal et al. gains importance [4]. …
