The use of physical restraint is fraught with danger – for the person being restrained and the people doing the restraining. It is usually nurses who decide who to restrain, in what circumstances, when to do it, what techniques to use and for how long. They are almost always the key members of staff who act to prevent harm occurring to the patient concerned or to others in his or her immediate environment. It is often a tough decision and it is a tough job.
