Histopathological evaluation of two diode lasers 450 and 980 nm in excision biopsies of oral benign lesion

Abstract

Purpose

The laser has evolved into a highly valuable surgical instrument in the field of dental surgery. It has various advantages for soft tissue disease care that traditional surgery does not have. The purpose of this research was to assess the effectiveness of two diode laser types (450 and 980 nm) in the histological excision of oral benign lesions. This study also aimed to evaluate the most effective diode laser method for oral lesion eradication with more regularity and less thermal effect.

Methods

Thirty-eight patients, ranging in age from 16 to 40 years, were the participants of this experiment. This study included 14 males and 24 females. The patients involved in this study were separated into two experimental groups: the first group was subjected to 450-nm treatment, and the second group was subjected to diode lasers at 980 nm. The laser settings were set using a diode laser, with the first wavelength of 980 nm applied at 1.3 W power, pulsed wave mode, and a tip diameter of 400 μm. The second wavelength was set to 450 nm at 1.3 W power, pulsed mode, and 400-μm tip diameter.

Results

The statistical analysis of the research groups showed that the post-operative histological scores of the surrounding tissue of the biopsy showed less thermal effect and more regularity in the excision line. The current study found that the 980-nm diode laser had a higher thermal effect and a less precise cutting line than the 450-nm diode laser. The 980-nm diode laser also had a higher cutting efficiency.

Conclusion

We concluded that the 450-nm diode laser is a more efficient and successful method that produces a clear and easily readable sample in comparison to 980 nm.
