Hypoxemic respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 pneumonia might require high supplemental oxygen and ICU admission. Many studies have been conducted on the target oxygen saturation in critically ill COVID-19 patients. Most of them focused on invasively ventilated patients, while few addressed non-intubated patients [1]. One study, the HOT-ICU trial, investigated the management of oxygen therapy by comparing the effects of targeting different oxygenation levels (PaO2 of 60 mmHg vs 90 mmHg) in critically ill patients. However, its post hoc analysis did not reveal statistically significant differences in the primary outcome: the number of days alive without life support [2, 3]. …
