Surveillance of Non-advanced Adenomas: Small May Be Big

Screening colonoscopy with polypectomy reduces the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) [
1]. After polypectomy, surveillance colonoscopies are recommended to ensure protection from CRC in patients with index polyps [
2]. The majority of surveillance colonoscopies are performed for non-advanced adenomas (NAA) (tubular adenomas < 1 cm). Since the detection of these lesions is increasing due to improvements in technology and attention to endoscopic and prep quality, determining appropriate surveillance intervals for individuals with these index NAA, which offer maximal protection while minimizing exposure to unnecessary surveillance exams is essential [
