Increasingly, older adults are undergoing major operations and are at high risk of functional decline.1 The American College of Surgeons2, supported by the Society of General Internal Medicine and American Geriatrics Society, recommends increasing involvement of primary care physicians (PCPs) in caring for older patients perioperatively. PCP involvement improves post-operative outcomes. Among older adults, described as 65 years and older, the presence of depression, greater social isolation, and lower resilience and resourcefulness are associated with higher post-operative functional decline.3 Yet, few studies have explored clinicians’ attitudes towards the role of psychosocial characteristics in perioperative care.
