Oncoplastic surgery for patients with invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) offers patients an additional, cosmetically minded option for breast-conserving surgery (BCS).
1,2 Previously, we demonstrated that immediate oncoplastic surgery was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of positive margins within a single institutional cohort of patients with ILC.
3 Despite this, some conventional views may make surgeons reluctant to recommend immediate oncoplastic surgery for patients at high risk of positive margins, such as those with ILC. This may be due to the perceived challenges in performing accurate reexcisions after tissue rearrangement and the possibility of needing to reverse an oncoplastic procedure if positive margins are identified postoperatively.
