Anemia after cardiac surgery: what is its link to outcomes?

Cardiac surgery encompasses multiple procedures on the heart and surrounding major vascular structures. In general, cardiac surgery has a higher risk than noncardiac surgery of major adverse postoperative outcomes, with specific procedural and patient characteristics that can individually or collectively elevate the risk. While preoperative anemia has been defined as one modifiable patient characteristic that can contribute to an increased risk of postoperative complications, the contribution of postoperative anemia is less clearly defined. In this issue of the Journal, Li et al. 1 summarize the available literature on postoperative anemia and its contribution to adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery. …
