Readability rescue: large language models may improve readability of patient education materials

Patient education materials (PEMs) such as pamphlets and online resources are important tools for improving patient knowledge of dermatologic topics [
1]. However, available materials often contain complex medical language which may limit patient understanding and present a barrier to improving health literacy [
1]. For example, one study found that the reading grade level of cutaneous lymphoma PEMs was significantly higher than the American Medical Association’s (AMA) recommended 6th grade reading level [
2]. Producing well-vetted PEMs is challenging and time-consuming. In other fields, large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT have been investigated as tools to modify the readability of existing PEMs [
