Response to “Missing Factors that may Elucidate Posttraumatic Seizures in Children”

We appreciate the interest and comments of Dr. Kapoor and Dr. Prabhakar on our recent article, “Effectiveness of fosphenytoin and levetiracetam to prevent posttraumatic seizures in young children with accidental or abusive traumatic brain injury” [1]. Their first question was regarding the medical history of the patients and whether there were children with a prior diagnosis of epilepsy. None of the patients included in the study had a history of seizure or epilepsy or were on an antiseizure medication. When we examine the 73 patients who had posttraumatic seizures, 11 of 73 (15%) were not previously healthy, and the majority of these children had a history of premature birth. One patient had a history of minor head trauma. …
